Massing Model

  1. This is a great synthesis of your previous ideas. As a parti, this represents a strong idea that can be developed into a great proposal. I especially like the fact that whether intentional or not, the mass is lifted off the ground and engages the site in a less than conventional way. Take a look at Thom Mayne's early drawings. There is a specific approach to how his buildings address the ground plane. Contrast that to say a Neil Denari or Wes Jones sketch and you can learn quite a bit about this relationship and the various approaches to it. Even Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas have a certain approach, unique to their overall approaches to massing.

Be careful that you are viewing this as a conceptual study and not as an expression of form. While the shell is a great approach, play with its deployment, its shape, etc. This is a good starting point. Push the development into a spatial experience. The form will follow in this case.

  2. Hi Harold,

Great start with a very strong conceptual model that you can develop. Make sure that you try carry through your concept as you develop your scheme further as there is a danger of it becoming diluted as you try to fit things into it - the nature of many medical rooms means that they are quite sterile in atmosphere and design (i.e boxes on plan), so make sure that you carry through the playfulness that you've started with.

Looking forward to seeing how this conceptual model translates into your initial sketches...

  3. Following the last comment, try this exercise:
utilize wood blocks volumetricly to represent programmatic spaces. Adjust the heights per the spatial requirements of the usage. Stack them up and play with adjacencies, both in plan and section. You can organize your circulation at the same time. Remember, straight lines are not always the best route...form this point, you can craft your skin or stuff the program into the form you like...Let one inform the other and massage them together
